Every morning, my favorite breakfast is simple yet full of flavor, and perfectly sized to carry with me wherever I go. Nothing beats starting the day with a delicious ‘bánh mì’ in hand (bánh mì-a type of Vietnamese sandwich filled with cold meats, pâte, and vegetables) and of course, it’s never complete without a rich cup of café (Vietnamese calls cà phê) or milk coffee (cà phê sữa). Together, this street food forms the ultimate morning duo that fuels both my body and spirit for the day ahead.
Bánh mì:
Waking up to the smell of a freshly baked bánh mì is a reminder of the simple joys of life. The crisp sound of the bread cracking as you take the first bite, combined with the explosion of flavors from the Vietnamese pork roll, pork, pickled vegetables, fresh herbs, and a drizzle of seasoning is like a burst of energy in the morning. It’s a balance between comfort and excitement—comfort from the soft fillings, and excitement from the fresh cilantro and spicy chili. Each bite feels like a reflection of Vietnam’s streets—vibrant, bustling, and full of life. Bánh mì in the morning is a reminder of how something so simple can bring so much satisfaction.
Cà phê sữa:
The first sip of cà phê sữa in the morning is like a wake-up call for your senses. The strong, bitter coffee contrasts beautifully with the rich sweetness of the condensed milk, creating a creamy, velvety texture. It’s not just a drink; it’s a slow moment of indulgence before the day begins. Vietnamese mornings are often defined by this coffee ritual—a moment to pause, reflect, and prepare mentally for the busy day ahead. The sweetness lingers on your palate, while the caffeine fuels your body, making it both a comforting and invigorating experience.
‘Bánh mì and cà phê sữa’ are more than just my go-to breakfast—they’re a little piece of Vietnam that I get to enjoy every morning. Whether I’m rushing out the door or taking my time to savor each bite and sip, this combo always gives me a comforting start to the day. It’s a simple pleasure that reminds me of the beauty in everyday moments, and no matter where I am, it brings a taste of home along with it.
